Hello, folks. It's that time again. We get to sit down and talk to another author about another book. This week, I'm happy to introduce Kristen L. Jackson, author of KEEPER OF THE WATCH: DIMENSION 7. Welcome to Martin Matthews Writes, Kristen. Firstly, congrats on the just released novel.

Kristen L. Jackson:
Thanks so much, Martin! And thanks for letting me interview with you on Martin Matthews Writes.

MM:
It's my privilege. So, what's all the hubbub about this watch? Chase Walker can't resist it. It seems mysterious. Tell us a little about Chase and this special watch of his Uncle's.

Kristen L. Jackson:
Chase's life changes drastically within just a few weeks. The uncle that raised him unexpectedly dies, he turns eighteen, and he discovers an old watch in his uncle's belongings. When he comes into contact with the watch, he is drawn to it--it calls to him both physically and mentally. He resists the urge to put the watch on and discovers that others are after it. That's when he meets Alyx.

MM:
Ah, yes, tell us more about Alyx. She's described as 'sexy and mysterious'. Sounds like she's going to upset the status quo for young Chase.

Kristen L. Jackson:
Alyx comes from another dimension. Chase notices right away that she is wearing a watch of her own. When intruders break into Chase's house looking for the watch, Alyx saves him from the Hunters. She explains that if Chase chooses to connect with his watch, it will give him the ability to travel to twelve different dimensional planes, jumping to a new dimension each month of his eighteenth year. She tries to persuade Chase to couple with his watch so they can jump together.

MM:
Whoa, sounds intense. So what else can you tell us about KEEPER OF THE WATCH?

Kristen L. Jackson:
The book is based in the fictional coastal town of Dune Harbor, but what most people don't know is that I (loosely) based the town in the book on the real town of Cape May, New Jersey. On several vacations, we witnessed dolphins swimming in the surf, up and down the beaches. Dolphins have been a favorite of mine since then. I included the dolphins in a key scene in the book.

MM:
Speaking of locales, tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, and what on earth have you been doing there?

Kristen L. Jackson:
I've lived in Reading, Pa, my entire life in a house across the street from the house I grew up in! I am a teacher, and have taught in different capacities and with different age groups for more than 20 years. You can usually find me at home with my husband of 27 years, two sons, and three large-breed dogs. (I have a bernese mountain dog, a newfoundland, and a saint bernard/bernese moutain dog mix.) We love to spend weekends at our cabin in the Pocono Mountains during spring, summer, and fall.

MM:
Sounds wonderful. I hope you get a lot of writing done at that cabin. Speaking of writing, share a little about your journey to becoming a published author. When did you start writing?

Kristen L. Jackson:
I started writing when I was in my thirties. My first attempt at writing was a children's picture book, a logical choice as an early childhood educator! That book was never published, but I am awaiting the release of my first children's picture book JOCELYN'S BOX OF SOCKS later in 2018. That was the beginning. From there I moved to a middle grade fiction book, and then young adult novel. I'm currently finishing up an adult science fiction novel that I hope to have published soon.

MM:
How did this particular story come to you? Were you intending to write young adult when you started KEEPER OF THE WATCH?

Kristen L. Jackson:
This story was intended to be for the young adult genre from the start. The idea came from my love of watches and time, just like my Dad. He passed away unexpectedly 3 years ago, and my mom gave me his watch. I started thinking...wouldn't it be great to write a book about a watch with some kind of 'power'? And then I started writing.

MM:
I'm sorry for your loss, Kristen. It's wonderful that you can share some of your experiences with your father in this book. What are some things you are hoping other people will take away from your novel?

Kristen L. Jackson:
I think the underlying theme is to never give up. Though plans may shift and paths may change, don't give up hope that things will work out in the end.

MM:
What and who are some of the major influences in your writing?

Kristen L. Jackson:
My two favorite authors are Dean Koontz and Nora Roberts. I love the sci-fi element of Koontz's books (My favorite is Watchers), and the mystical element to many of Roberts books.

MM:
I'm a big Koontz fan myself. He's definitely had an influence on my writing! What are you currently reading?

Kristen L. Jackson:
I am currently reading two books. The Earth Bleeds Red by Jackson Paul Baer, and Turquoise Girl by Cherie Mitchell.

MM:
I'll have to check those out. So, this is book one in the series. I assume we can expect more adventures with Chase and Alyx?

Kristen L. Jackson:
Absolutely! I'm finishing up my current work in progress, and after that I'll be hard at work on Book 2 in the KEEPER OF THE WATCHseries. There are lots of dimensions left to explore...

MM:
